Hollis Research

Programming guru John Hollis set up Hollis Research (now Hollis Communications) after leaving Quicksilva in 1984. In 1994 after John returned to the UK from Guernsey, Mark joined him at Hollis Research as Head of Creative Design. Mark moved on from Hollis Research in 1998 joining Rebellion as Head of Design.

Mark and John worked together on some groundbreaking technologies and game designs for companies like Hasbro and Sega. A third key member of Hollis Research was Terry Cox who had special skills in Internet and network technologies. Hollis Research also employed freelance design and art teams.

They designed two massively multiplayer Internet games, one based on social interactions in a virtual city, the other a space trading and combat game. They produced a report on Internet gaming for Hasbro, including designing a 'Virtual World' that would feature Hasbro's intellectual properties in their own 'game zones'.

As well as working on computer games (Transformers Beast Wars) Mark also worked on board games for Hasbro, including the Star Wars Interactive Video Board Game. Mark and John worked closely together on an interactive video system that allowed a 'remote control' command unit to fast forward and rewind videos, on any video recorder, to specific points on video tapes. This Random Access Video system was designed to work with board games, playing video clips at key points in the games. Mark worked on the game designs, John on the command unit, Terry created test video tapes.

While at Hollis Research Mark headed up the design of Hasbro's 'Transformers - Beast Wars' title and Sega's 'Chicago Syndicate' and 'Red Meat' titles. Red Meat featured a range of stunning, twisted and voluptuous character designs by fantasy artist Simon Bisley.
